Gorgeous & intriguing

I got one of the last pieces of this fabric. I had planned to cut it for a quilt top but now that I've seen it ... I think it will be a wall hanging all by itself. There is so much tragedy worked into this fabric, not all of which can be seen in the online picture. Unfolding it is a jolt--ships so spunky that you'd never imagine that they are slave ships, a calm series of waves; a hand reaching for a comb, a clam shell, a female mask. I don't really know, but I think this was designed by a powerful, angry woman contemplating removal from all that is familiar, in Africa.
